About The Bipolar Biography Project
The Bipolar Biography Project is an independent educational and documentary project about the work and publicly discussed experiences of people who have disclosed a bipolar diagnosis or whose diagnosis is reliably documented in the historical record.
The project brings together source-based information about people from different professions, backgrounds, countries, and periods of history, alongside what reliable sources establish about their experiences with bipolar disorder.
Profiles may discuss subjects such as diagnosis, episodes, psychosis, hospitalization, treatment, recovery, work, and advocacy when reliable public information about those subjects is available.
The editorial approach, sourcing standards, inclusion criteria, and profile methodology used by The Bipolar Biography Project are described on the Method page.
Not medical advice
The Bipolar Biography Project does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, psychotherapy, or crisis services.
Information on this website is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. It should not be used as a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
Descriptions of a person's experience with medication, hospitalization, psychotherapy, substance use, recovery, or any other aspect of bipolar disorder describe that individual's publicly documented experience. They are not treatment recommendations.
You should not start, stop, or change medication or treatment based on information found on The Bipolar Biography Project.
Not a crisis service
The Bipolar Biography Project is not monitored as a crisis or emergency service.
If you or someone else may be in immediate danger, contact emergency services or crisis resources available in your location.
Messages sent through The Bipolar Biography Project contact form should not be used for urgent mental-health or medical situations.
Profile information
The Bipolar Biography Project makes reasonable efforts to present accurate, source-based information. Profiles may draw from first-person interviews, essays, books, speeches, journalism, institutional sources, academic sources, archives, historical documentation, and other publicly available material.
Contemporary profiles generally require reliable evidence that the person has publicly disclosed bipolar disorder. Historical profiles may rely on a well-established historical or biographical record where first-person disclosure in the contemporary sense was not possible.
The Bipolar Biography Project does not diagnose people based on behaviour, reputation, symptoms reported by others, or speculation.
References to bipolar disorder, Bipolar I disorder, Bipolar II disorder, treatment, hospitalization, psychosis, recovery, or other clinical information are intended to reflect what the cited sources establish.
Information may be incomplete, become outdated, or be revised as stronger or more recent sources become available. Profile pages may display a last-updated date indicating when the project most recently revised that profile.
What inclusion means
Inclusion on The Bipolar Biography Project does not imply that the person profiled endorses, supports, participates in, or is affiliated with the project.
Likewise, The Bipolar Biography Project does not endorse every statement, action, organization, product, treatment, political position, or other activity associated with a person who appears on the site.
The people included in the project are not intended to form a representative sample of everyone with bipolar disorder. People with public careers, advocacy work, published interviews, or otherwise well-documented lives are more likely to have enough reliable public information available for a profile.
A person's professional achievements, employment, fame, wealth, or public recognition should not be interpreted as a measure of recovery or of the value of that person's experience.
Profile selection and removal
The Bipolar Biography Project independently decides which people to research and include. Selection considers the strength of the public evidence, the amount of reliable information available, and the project's aim to include people from a range of professions, backgrounds, countries, and experiences.
Public disclosure does not automatically result in a profile. The project may consider the context in which a disclosure was made and may choose not to amplify information when doing so could go beyond the apparent purpose or context of that disclosure.
There are people who may be appropriate for the project but have not yet been identified, researched, or added. Profile suggestions are welcome through the Contact page.
If a person featured on The Bipolar Biography Project does not wish to be included, they may request that their profile be removed. The project will honor such a request without requiring the person to provide a reason.
Profile ordering
The order in which profiles appear on The Bipolar Biography Project is not a ranking.
Profile placement may reflect editorial choices, automated sorting, and practical considerations such as the availability of reliable information or suitable imagery.
Ordering should not be interpreted as a judgment of a person's importance, achievement, influence, recovery, or the value of one person's story over another.
