What has been publicly discussed

  • Lobo has publicly identified himself as living with bipolar disorder. He was diagnosed in 2015 after a period of rapidly changing time zones for work contributed to pronounced shifts between high and low moods. [2][1]
  • He has said that after the diagnosis he struggled to separate symptoms of the condition from his own personality and sense of identity. [1]
  • Lobo has described a manic episode in Hong Kong in 2015 as the point when his life was “completely upended.” He said the episode led to an identity crisis. [1]
  • He has also described periods of intense depression that affected his self-worth and sense of identity. [3]
  • Lobo has described using a combination of medication, therapy and other approaches to manage bipolar disorder. He has also incorporated meditation, yoga and body-based practices, describing his approach as combining Western treatment with Eastern philosophies. [1]
  • He has said that support from his wife, friends and wider community has also been important in helping him maintain his wellbeing. [1]
  • Lobo has described living well as balancing his personal and professional roles and taking things “one day at a time.” He has said that he still sometimes struggles with managing his drive and energy and separating his mental-health difficulties from his identity. [1]
  • Lobo co-founded BecauseYOU in 2020 to create community-based mental-health support in India. The organization provides group programs for individuals and works with organizations on psychological safety, mental-health education and trauma-informed support. [4][2]
  • He has said that his own experience with bipolar disorder contributed to his decision to work in mental health and to focus on making support less isolating. He has also argued for combining community, clinical care and broader approaches to wellbeing rather than relying on a single model of treatment. [2][3]
