Pierre Péladeau was a Quebec entrepreneur and publisher who founded Le Journal de Montréal in 1964 and became the founding president of Quebecor the following year. He remained Quebecor’s chief executive until his death in 1997. [1]
Career and work
Péladeau entered publishing in 1950 when he bought the weekly Le Journal de Rosemont. He founded Le Journal de Montréal in 1964 and became the founding president of Quebecor in 1965. [1]
Under his leadership, Quebecor developed into a major Canadian communications and printing business. Péladeau also supported numerous cultural and philanthropic projects in Quebec. [1][2]
What has been publicly discussed
- Péladeau publicly identified himself as having manic-depressive illness, the terminology commonly used at the time for bipolar disorder. Jean-Rémy Provost of Revivre later told the National Assembly of Québec that he had encouraged Péladeau to speak openly about the condition and that Péladeau’s disclosure prompted a large number of people to contact the organization and share their own experiences. [3]
- A 2025 retrospective reports that Péladeau experienced recurrent depressive periods during a difficult period following alcohol withdrawal and received lithium under medical supervision to reduce their recurrence. [4]
