Career and work
Van Zandt began performing in Houston in the mid-1960s and moved into recording after songwriter Mickey Newbury introduced him to Nashville. Between the late 1960s and 1970s, he released a series of albums that became cult favorites, including For the Sake of the Song, Townes Van Zandt, Delta Momma Blues, and High, Low and in Between. Although he never achieved major commercial success as a recording artist, his songwriting became highly influential. “If I Needed You” became a hit for Emmylou Harris and Don Williams, while Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard had a major hit with “Pancho and Lefty.” Van Zandt was inducted into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016.
